Coconut coir is sold in various consitencies, from fine coir dust to a more bark-like mixture.
Coconut coir, or coco peat, is a waste product of the coconut fiber industry. The coir comes from the outer husk of the coconut. Coconut coir is used in place of peat moss in soil mixtures. Unlike peat, coir is a renewable resource. It is also less acidic than peat, lasts longer and has a higher water retention. Coir can be used in soilless potting mixes or mixed with soil in concentrations of up to 80 percent of the mixture. The coir is usually sold in bricks that expand in water.
