Name: Malva Nut / kembang samangkok (Scaphium macropodum)

Habitat: Undisturbed mixed dipterocarp, (peat)-swamp and sub-montane forests. In secondary forests usually as a pre-disturbance remnant.

Description: The Malva Nut, known locally as kembang samangkok, meaning “fill-a-cup”, is endangered in Singapore. The brown jelly-like substance used in the local dessert cheng tng, is produced by cutting the seed of its winged fruit and soaking it in water. This emergent tree can grow up to 45m in height. Its wood is used for furniture and seeds can be used for treatment of ailments such as diarrhea, dysentry and asthma.
